Messenger of the Fischer Post

When?

14 - 17. May 2025

Where?

Hall 3.0

What?

From the 14th century onwards, the postal traffic in their national territory was taken over by the ‘louffende Botten’, who acted as postman. These ‘louffenden Botten’ can be recognised by their uniform and the national coat of arms. They carried a letter box in which they mainly carried letters from the authorities, but also some private mail. From 1675, Beat Fischer leases the postal registry of the Canton of Berne and after around 300 years, the Bernese postmen have had their day. (Excursion tip: visit the Läuferbrunnen fountain by the Untertorbrücke, where a Bernese postman is depicted as a fountain figure).
At the BERNABA'25, the Bernese postman will be resurrected in a customised uniform. His new task will be to sell raffle tickets and be available as a model for photos. Here and there he will also shout out important information...

A piece of cultural heritage finds its way back to its homeland after a hundred years. The Schangnau postal coach is a two-horse vehicle that could tell many stories. Between 1904 and 1925, it carried mail, passengers and the classic "Kemmeriboden Merängge" between Wiggen and Kemmeriboden. Now, it will run for four hours a day on the BERNABA'25 outdoor site and will be available to the public for rides.
